HP Business Laptop

For example, by paying $900 you can purchase the HP ProBook 5310m. The looks are very appealing as this aluminum deck and lid laptop is serious and wild at the same time. The lack of an optical drive should not bother you so much as you have a lot of download options for the programs you need and if that is not an option, you can always buy an external optical drive which is cheap and can easily be connected to your laptop using an USB port. We were happy to see that the keys gave us such a positive response and the space between them reminded us of Sony VAIO laptops. This type of keyboard may be difficult to get along with at first, especially if you are not used to the layout of the keys but it's only a matter of time until you will enjoy typing on this laptop. The touchpad is glossy and it causes friction which may be unpleasant to most of you. However, the touchpad supports multi-touch gestures and this is a feature which is fun to use and can be very helpful once you get the hang of things. To use them, you will have to install the Synaptics touch software and then configure it for use. You can use the multi-touch feature for zooming in and out of photos or rotating images by simply rotating your fingers. The 13.3 inch display is not one of the best we've seen, but it will produce good images. The colors are not very clear though and you should try reversing the angle of the display and you will discover that clearer images are shown when the angle is different.

As far as the speakers go, you will find them good enough to watch a movie or listen to your favorite tunes, but if you are too far away from the laptop, or watching a movie in a big room with lots of your friends, do not expect to hear much. External speakers are recommended. Instead of a HDMI port, HP has included a Display port which you can use to connect external projectors and display and this feature is much more useful since you will be probably using this laptop for business presentations in that big conference room. You have a single headphone and microphone jack. This was a sacrifice (which we find rather useless) made by HP to save up some space. Three USB ports should be quite enough. You also have a 2-in-1 memory card reader and the Ethernet jack. To keep in touch wherever you are, you have an integrated webcam, with 2.0 megapixels which should provide clear images during your conference calls. We recommend you use Skype because this program takes out the best of your webcams and it will broadcast extremely clear, sharp and real-time images.

The battery lasted 5 hours and 30 minutes considering the wireless function was always turned on and we browsed the internet non-stop. This means that if you use the laptop just for editing documents or reading them, you will probably get a full 7 hours battery life. This is extremely good since the battery has only 4 cells and they are not exactly top of the line material when it comes to batteries. If you a get a bigger battery (we are not sure if they are available yet or not) like a 6-cell or a 9-cell then you will get longer life by probably 2 to 4 hours.

Another good laptop you may want to look into is the HP ProBook 4510s-NX613EA. Yes, the laptops is about as fancy as the name.

Unfortunately, the black lid attracts a lot of fingerprints (same old "glossy problem") so no frequent opening and closing unless you want to clean it all the time. For a 15.6 inch laptop we found the keys to be quite small but since you get the numeric keypad as well then there is not much complaining to do. Once you get over the size problem, typing should become quite a pleasure with the good response you get from this keyboard. The touchpad is also pleasant to use unlike the left and right mouse buttons which feel loose. You should be satisfied with the number and variety of ports and connections.  You get your usual USB ports, HDMI and VGA output, the Ethernet port, a card reader and the headphone and microphone jacks.

The 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6570 processor plus the 3 GB of RAM provide a lot of power and speed and this is something we did not expect to find in a business laptop.  320 GB of disk space is a lot for storing documents and files and this is the amount of free space we would expect to find in a home-usage computer or a gaming laptop. The Intel GMA X4500M HD graphics card was a good choice for this laptop since it helps save up some battery life and you will not be using this laptop for any fancy gaming. Another pleasant surprise was the integrated Bluetooth device and even if it's not indispensable, it will help you transfer files between laptops or from phone to laptop faster. We imagined this laptop would have a finger print reader just like most HP Pavilion models but it didn't. It should have, considering that large companies have a lot of classified documents which could cause major problems if they were to fall in the wrong hands. Well, we'll have to settle with password authentication. The battery will last a bit over 4 hours and this is average when compared to similarly configured laptops on the market. You have a good balance between quality and price with this laptop (actually, you have that balance with quite a lot of HP business laptops) even if there are small cons like the lack of the fingerprint reader or the fact that the glossy lid attracts a lot of fingerprints (nothing a good fiber cloth-wipe can't handle).
